Biographical/Historical Note
Mount St. Mary Academy is a private school for girls in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. The foundation of the academy began under Andrew Byrne, Arkansas's first Catholic bishop, and Ireland's Sisters of Mercy, who sent four nuns and five postulants to the Diocese of Little Rock. The school taught both Catholic and non-Catholic boys and girls until 1908, when the school began offering high school level learning to girls only. The school closed the elementary section and dormitories in 1970 due to the vast increase in high school enrollment. Mount St. Mary continued to grow and evolve with the changing times, while still being competitive with other schools around the Little Rock area.
