This collection includes correspondence from Alton Duncan, United States Marine, in San Diego, California to Freeman Ray “Short” and Thelma Bowman of Little Rock, Arkansas, and the high school diploma of Jefferson F. Duncan, younger brother to Alton, from Guy High School in Guy, Faulkner County, Arkansas.

Biographical/Historical Note

Alton S. Duncan was born on May 21, 1921 in Faulkner County, Arkansas, to Minnie Pearl Quattlebaum and Sherman Duncan. Alton Duncan and his brother Jefferson Duncan fought in World War II and both are buried in the Little Rock National Cemetery. Alton was a United States Marine stationed in San Diego, California, in 1942. Jefferson Duncan was born on April 11, 1926 in Faulkner County, Arkansas. He enlisted in the Navy on March 20, 1944, and left military service on May 6, 1946. Alton and Jefferson’s sister Thelma marred Freeman Ray “Short” Bowman, who was also in the Navy during World War II.
