Biographical/Historical Note
Richard Perry Harrison was born in Arkansas on October 12, 1843 to Green and Rebecca Harrison. In July of 1861, at the age of eighteen, Harrison joined the Confederate States Army at Camp Walker in Benton County. He served in the Thirty-Fourth, Arkansas Infantry Company K, Confederate States of America, Engineering Battalion. This collection contains the Civil War diary of Richard Perry Harrison. Harrison describes troop movements throughout Arkansas, different military engagements, his capture by Union troops and subsequent escape, and bouts of sickness that he and his fellow soldiers faced. He also details different building projects, mostly bridges, which the engineering battalion constructed during the war, and the material they used for those projects.
