This collection contains a letter from John Gatling to his sister, Mrs. P.G. Hollowell, describing in detail their mother’s life during her illness and death.

Biographical/Historical Note

John Gatling was born on August 2, 1851 in Perquimans County, North Carolina to James and Mary Gatling. He went to the University of Virginia in 1870, graduating in 1872. Gatling studied law in the office of Moore & Gatling for three years. After which he entered Harvard Law School and passed the bar exam in North Carolina in 1877. Gatling married Elizabeth Gilliam in 1881 in Hertford, and then moved to Forrest City, Arkansas. John’s mother, Mary Elizabeth Commander Gatling, was born on July 21, 1825 in North Carolina and passed away on June 10, 1896 in Forrest City with her son and his family.
