Description
This collection consists of two scrapbooks containing information about Gillett, Arkansas, in 1955 and 1956. Business development, community health services, education, religion, and overall community improvement are the focus of the news clippings, photographs, and programs in the scrapbooks.
Biographical/Historical Note
Gillett was founded in 1881 by settlers from Fulton County, Illinois. It was named for railroad executive Francis M. Gillett in 1892, and incorporated in 1906. The town was hit hard by the flood of 1927 and the Great Depression, but by the 1940s the town was beginning to recover and attract new businesses and factories.
