Description

This journal contains travel notes, expense accounts, comments on frontier religious life, agriculture, social customs, and slavery, as well as names and circumstances of individuals Ridgway met.

Biographical/Historical Note

Robert Ridgway, an itinerant Methodist preacher, was born about 1820 in Richland County, Ohio. He traveled through Illinois and Michigan for a number of years, and then in 1841 visited Arkansas, southeast Oklahoma, and northeastern Texas. He preached to Arkansas pioneers, American Indians, and slaves. During his travels he visited Batesville and Washington, Arkansas. He died soon after his return to the North in 1842.
