Description
This volume contains abstracts of dray, wagon, and trading boat licenses issued from March 1, 1839, to March 1, 1843. Each abstract includes the name of the licensee, the type of conveyance, and the date of the license. It also contains a January 15, 1842, news clipping of a legal notice entitled, "License Notice."
Biographical/Historical Note
Since a dray's movement along primitive streets caused considerable damage, in 1839 the Little Rock, Arkansas, city council passed an ordinance requiring draymen, cabinet furnishers, drivers of heavy wagons, and operators of trading boats to obtain a license for "each and every dray and furniture car to be run in this city." The ordinance was renewed in 1842.
