Biographical/Historical Note

The Washington County Historical Society was established in 1951 to identify, preserve, and share the history of Washington County. The organization started on a Sunday afternoon (Feb. 18, 1951) in the student center of the Lutheran Church on the northeast corner of W. Dickson Street and Arkansas Avenue. It was the result of a letter-writing campaign in the fall of 1950 spearheaded by Walter J. Lemke who became the organization’s first president.
