Description

This collection holds an open letter to the ‘qualified voters of Conway County’ concerning Toncray’s candidacy for the legislature. He outlines the changes he would like to make and his overall agenda.

Biographical/Historical Note

Silas T. Toncray was born in Washington County, Maryland, in 1795 to Daniel and Huldah Toncray. He moved to Shelby County, Kentucky, sometime before 1812, where he was registered as a craftsperson, occupation silversmith. Toncray also worked as a silversmith in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1821 and Little Rock, Arkansas, from 1824-1830. When he moved to Little Rock, he organized the first Baptist Church in Little Rock. He was appointed to postmaster in Conway County, Arkansas, and he ran for a territorial legislative office.
