Biographical/Historical Note
The Tax Assessor was required by law to provide public notice to all taxpayers in a local newspaper that the official “Tax List” was available. The assessor’s would then travel to different townships within the county in order to make it easier for citizens to assess their property and pay their taxes. This collection contains an assessor’s notice with a list of dates and locations that the White County Assessor, J.C. Watson, was going to be positioned at in order to assess the real estate, personal property tax, and poll tax of the residents of White County, Arkansas. This notice is dated April 30, 1917, the first year women in Arkansas could vote in the primary elections. This document states that women who wish to vote in the primary must register with the assessor’s office.
