Description
This collection is comprised of materials from Russell C. Stephens military service during World War I. Materials include correspondence, World War I publications, honorable discharge papers, French postcards, photographic postcards, newspaper clippings, and a World War I cartoon scrapbook.
Biographical/Historical Note
Russell Cavanaugh Stephens was born in Blevins, Hempstead County, Arkansas, on December 9, 1889, to Lula A. née Brown and Phillip Cavanaugh Stephens. In June of 1917, Russell C. Stephens was drafted for service in World War I. He served in France during the war in Company “A” of the 526th Engineers SV. BN with the rank of corporal. Stephens was honorably discharged in 1919. In February of 1918, he married Effie Pierce in Pike County, Arkansas. The marriage produced two children, one of whom survived into adulthood. Russell Cavanaugh Stephens died on March 25, 1967. His wife Effie Stephens died September 22, 1987. Both are buried in Marlbrook Cemetery, located in Blevins, Hempstead County, Arkansas.
