This collection contains a letter from Lara Virginia Gibbs to Arkansas History Commission Director Ted Worley, concerning C.F.M. Noland.
Biographical/Historical Note
Charles Fenton Mercer Noland was born in Aldie, Virginia, on August 23, 1810, the fourth of the five children of William and Catherine (Callender) Noland. In 1925, Fent Noland came to Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas, where he read law under James Woodson Bates. He wrote for the New York "Spirit of the Times," a leading sports and humor newspaper. His fictional character "Pete Whetstone" gave him notoriety at the national level.
