Description
The Arkansas Department of Health records contain Arkansas State Board of Health minutes from 1951 to 2008.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Arkansas Department of Health oversees all matters pertaining to the health of Arkansas's citizens, including food safety, hospitals, and medicine. The first board of health in the state was the Little Rock Board of Health, which was formed in 1878 due to the yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans, Louisiana. This was turned into the state board by Governor William Read Miller the following year. The state legislature created an official state board of health in 1881. In 1913, Act 96 created a permanent state board of health. The Bureau of Vital Statistics was also created with this act and charged with registering births and deaths and analysis of food and drugs and the laws relating to them. With Act 1954 of 2005, the department merged with the Arkansas Department of Human Services, creating the Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services. The two departments were separated again in May 2007, after Mike Beebe took office.
