Description
This collection consists of four ledgers kept by the Wheeler Farm in the years 1939 through 1945. They show record of employees' time and other expenses of the farm. The collection also contains loose material from the weekly time book that was kept from 1942 to 1945.
Biographical/Historical Note
This collection of ledgers was originally kept by the Wheeler Farm in Marion (Crittenden Co.), Arkansas. The farm was owned and operated by James Harvey Wheeler. Wheeler was born on August 4, 1915, in Hernando, Mississippi. He married Dorothy Stewart Wheeler in 1938. The ledgers in this collection are dated in the 1930s and 1940s. In 1940, the farm consisted of over 400 acres between Marion and Mound City, Arkansas. The farm mainly grew cotton, but also corn and soybeans. Wheeler was drafted for WWII in 1940 and spent almost five years in the European theater. Therefore, these logs were most likely written by Charles H. Williams, Wheeler's farm manager. The Williams house was located next to the Wheeler house and both were about one mile from the farm buildings. Neither of the houses are still standing today. Wheeler died on February 26, 1995.
