This collection contains one resolution in memorial of John Wassell, Arkansas Supreme Court Bar, dated January 29, 1881, along with a newspaper clipping of his obituary.
Biographical/Historical Note
John Wassell (1815-1881) was an English-born architect who arrived in Little Rock in 1837 to complete construction on the Old State House. His obituary mentions that he built a number of buildings in early Little Rock, published a Whig newspaper, and at the age of forty-three began studying law, which he practiced for the rest of his life. The obituary also credits him with helping set up Little Rock's first telegraph line to Memphis, as well as helping to organize Little Rock's early water and gas infrastructure.
