Description

This collection contains a photocopy of a letter from John Benton Brown to Mr. Parson Jackson. It also contains a photocopy of a letter from Mary Lee Page to Russell Baker of the Arkansas History Commission requesting information on her ancestor, John Benton Brown.

Biographical/Historical Note

John Benton Brown was born in South Carolina on February 9, 1878. He married Sarah Ann Huston (Houston) in Nashville, Tennessee, on October 6, 1808. Brown was in the War of 1812, 2nd Regiment Cocke's West Tennessee Militia, and First Sergeant, Captain Francis S. Ellis' Company. John and Sarah Brown moved to Cabin Creek (now Lamar), Johnson County, Arkansas, in 1836. Brown was a probate judge in Johnson County in 1838 and 1852. He was elected to the Arkansas Legislature in 1844. Brown died on October 25, 1852.
