This collection contains an article detailing the history of a gold pocket watch that belonged to James W. Crawford and General William Ayers Crawford. The watch had been donated to the History Commission. The collection also contains correspondence between History Commission Director, Dr. John L. Ferguson, and Sybil (Mrs. James W.) Crawford, who sent the article to the History Commission.

Biographical/Historical Note

Mrs. James W. Crawford donated an antique gold pocket watch to the Arkansas History Commission, which had belonged to her late husband. Mr. Crawford had inherited the watch, which had been passed down in the family from his great-grandfather, General William Ayers Crawford, of Benton, who had served in the Mexican War, assisted in the organization of the militia during the Civil War, and served in the 1858-1859 State Legislature.
