Biographical/Historical Note
The material in this collection dealing with Edward Sauter consists of three letters for the years 1865, 1866, and 1867 that are written in German; a letter dated February 7, 1868 from Edward Sauter of Little Rock to Professor Joseph Henry at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. concerning his translation of Hochstetter’s New Zealand; a letter dated March 25, 1868 from Joseph Henry to Edward Sauter acknowledging receipt of Sauter’s Hochstetter’s New Zealand; a certificate dated April 18, 1868 from the Smithsonian Institution to Edward Sauter acknowledging his gift of Hochstetter’s New Zealand, translated from German; an undated poetry translation in a foreign language; 1979 research correspondence about Edward Sauter and a biographical sketch of Sauter generated by Russell Baker from the Arkansas History Commission.
