The Claim of Colored Freedmen of the Cherokee Strip in this collection dated February 28, 1896 is a promissory note for a mare purchased by Andrea and Josh Shepperd from J. Hambrick, H. Nokes, and J.W. Vandergriff. The term Cherokee Freedmen refers to the African-American men and women who were formerly slaves of the Cherokee, their descendants, and those born of unions between formerly enslaved or enslaved African-Americans and Cherokee tribal members before and after the removal of Indians to Indian Territory.
