Biographical/Historical Note

The Southerland family settled in Arkansas in the 1840s. Thomas Southerland owned and operated a hotel called Southerland House in Camden. In 1888, the property where the hotel once sat was purchased by Judge W.M. Cox for the construction of the new Ouachita County courthouse. Two of Thomas' sons fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War, and a fortification built on the family's land in 1861 was named Fort Southerland.
