Biographical/Historical Note

Frederick Steele (1819-1868) served as a major general in the Union Army during the Civil War. DeValls Bluff was incorporated on April 4, 1866, and is a city in Prairie County. It was occupied by Union forces during the Civil War and was a major outpost as low water on the Arkansas River made it difficult to reach Little Rock, which was under siege in 1863.
