This collection contains papers belonging to Martin L. Root including a homestead certificate, warrant, and stock certificate dated between 1875 and 1907.

Biographical/Historical Note

Martin Luther Root (1837-1923) was born February 9, 1837 in Lancaster, New York. He served as a sergeant in Company B, 10th Regiment, Missouri Cavalry, United States Army during the Civil War. Root also served for one year as a 1st Sargent in Company D, 1st Regiment, United States Veteran Volunteers, United States Army. He married Elizabeth Adams in Hamilton, Iowa September 14, 1867. They had four children: Frank, Sarah, Olive, and Cleo. In 1893, Root moved to Washington County, Arkansas. He died of pneumonia on January 20, 1923.
