This collection contains one letter written by John R. Homer Scott written to his wife on State of Arkansas Constitutional Convention letterhead and dated August 23, 1874 as he reports on what he has been doing during the convention.
Biographical/Historical Note
John R. Homer Scott (1813-1905) was born October 16, 1813, in St. Genevieve, Missouri, to Andrew Scott, former United States judge of Arkansas Territory, and Eliza Jones Scott. The Scott family moved to Arkansas in 1819, eventually settling in Pope County. John Scott married Elizabeth Brown on December 30, 1847. Although he had not studied law, he was elected special judge to the circuit court. He was asked to run for a vacancy in the state legislature, but declined. He served as a Captain in Company A, Scott's Squadron Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry Volunteers, beginning August 3, 1861. He transferred to Brooks Battalion, 2nd Brigade in the Western Division, Confederate States Army, where he served until the end of the Civil War. In 1881, he and B.F. Jobe took over publication of the Russellville Courier-Democrat upon the retirement of J.H. Battenfield. They ran the newspaper until 1883, when they were succeeded by W.L. Morris. Scott died August 23, 1905, in Russellville.
