This collection contains correspondence and papers written by and to John C. Hughes of Arkansas written between 1869 and 1920.

Biographical/Historical Note

John Chapel Hughes (1849-1922) was born December 21, 1849 in Cuming, Georgia to James Hughes and Isabella Bennett Hughes. Hughes married Julia Adeline Johnston February 18, 1875. They had the following children James Alexander, Stella Grace, Ada Belle, Julia May, Mattie Lee, Fannie Maude, Ora Chapel, and John Cleo. Julia died October 9, 1897 in Murfreesboro, Arkansas. Hughes married Sarah Isabelle Johnston Lochamy, Julia’s sister on January 18, 1897 in Murfreesboro, Arkansas and they had a son Roy Edmund. John C. Hughes died February 22, 1922 in Murfreesboro, Arkansas.
