Description
This collection contains photocopies of two letters belonging to the Rev. James W. Wilson family written between 1833 and the Civil War.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Reverend James Wilson Moore was born September 14, 1797 in Pennsylvania to James Moore and Mary Woods Moore. James W. Moore entered Princeton Theological Seminary in 1825 and was ordained in October 1827. Rev. Moore arrived in Little Rock, Arkansas in January 1828 and organized the first Presbyterian church in Arkansas. He married Elizabeth Guild Green and they had eight children including their eldest William E. Moore. William E. Moore was born July 28, 1831 and attended Nassau College in New Jersey, graduating in 1852. William E. Moore married Sallie E. Washington. He joined the 25th Regiment, Arkansas Infantry, Confederate States Army, serving as a captain. William E Moore died at the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863.
