Description

This collection contains correspondence, an account book, and a newspaper related to Silvester Thacher.

Biographical/Historical Note

This collection contains several pieces of correspondence between Sergeant S.B. Thacher, his wife Mary Ann (née Burtrau), and her family during and after the Civil War. The family was mostly based in Michigan, where Thacher and his wife were married. The collection contains an account book used by Thacher during his military service in 1865, as well as a newspaper carrying the news of Abraham Lincoln's death from April 15, 1965. It also erroneously reports the simultaneous assassination attempt on Secretary of State William H. Seward as successful, even giving a time of death, when Seward, in fact, lived another seven years.
