Biographical/Historical Note
Albert Blade, a black man, was accused of attempted assault on a 12 year-old white girl in Wilson, Arkansas. The child’s father was M. J. Blackwell, a planter from Evadale, Arkansas. The Arkansas Gazette’s report of the incident stated that three fifth-grade girls had wandered away from a school picnic on the outskirts of Wilson, where they met Albert Blade along the road. The girls accused him of holding one of the girls, Blackwell’s daughter, until she screamed, at which point he ran from the scene. Albert was found about four miles from the school picnic and taken into custody by a posse. Nine of the sheriff’s men held Albert in custody at a warehouse until Blackwell arrived. Blackwell, along with a lynch mob of 500 men and women, took Albert four miles outside of Wilson where they tortured and killed him. Albert was 22 years-old when he was burned and lynched by the mob for a crime without due process.
