Description

This collection contains materials compiled by Anne Sanderson Smith as part of research for her unfinished master's thesis.

Biographical/Historical Note

In her master's thesis, Anne Sanderson Smith attempted to prove that Captain Leonard Josiah Crocker of Woodruff County, Arkansas, assumed the name of William Quantrill during the Civil War and led his famed gang of guerrillas along the Missouri-Kansas border. It was reported that Quantrill died in prison towards the end of the war, but Mrs. Smith hoped to prove otherwise. During her research, Mrs. Smith got married, and the thesis was left unfinished.
