This collection contains deeds, tax receipts, and other legal papers of the Hartin and Berry families from St. Francis and Woodruff counties in Arkansas.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Berry and Hartin families were early settlers in Arkansas. The Hartin family reached Phillips County(present-day Lee County) in the early 1840s, while the Berry family settled in Woodruff County by the 1850s. John C. Berry (1835-1879) owned land in Woodruff and St. Francis counties. His daughter, Moaning Lessie Berry (1860-1934), married John Burrow Groves Hartin (1859-1912), a fellow Woodruff County landowner. They had a son, Robert Roscoe Hartin (1888-1946), who eventually moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas, and married Ruth Anna Bohrer in 1924.
