Description
This collection contains a land grant signed by President James Buchanan. This land patent is for section one, township five south, range eleven west, which lays in modern day Jefferson County, Arkansas.
Biographical/Historical Note
The United States Bureau of Land Management, General Land Office (GLO), transferred millions of acres of land from the federal government to private ownership between 1820 and 1908. Congress authorized disposal of these lands through various means and for various reasons, largely to encourage Americans to move west. Worden Pope received this land grant for 313 acres of land in Jefferson County, Arkansas, July 2, 1860.
