A hand drawn map of Village Creek drainage ditch.
Swan C. Dowell was a real estate agent and land developer based in Walnut Ridge, Lawrence County, Arkansas during the early 20th century. One of his many ventures included the administration and development of the Village Creek Drainage District. Dredging and ditches were a large business as low-lying swamp lands were drained to be turned into fertile farmland. The Village Creek Slough and ditches remain an important part of agriculture in Lawrence County today.
