Description

This order, issued by General N.B. Burrow at Fort Smith, Arkansas, instructs all men to report for military service and warns citizens that men who refuse to do so are untrustworthy, and may be Union sympathizers, deserters, or spies.

Biographical/Historical Note

During this time period of the war, Arkansas was on high alert. Springfield, Missouri, had recently been captured by the Union. Arkansan Confederates, fearing an invasion, sought to muster all possible men into military service, and alert the citizens to be on-guard against potential deserters and Union sympathizers.
