Description

This collection consists of various types of bonds posted between 1815 and 1924, with most representing surety bonds for people elected or appointed to public office.

Biographical/Historical Note

These records are part of a larger group of county records once held by the Lawrence County Historical Society and, prior to that, on file with the Powhatan Courthouse, fifth county seat of Lawrence County. Counties required people to post bonds for a variety of reasons; sometimes it was related to election or nomination of an individual to public office; other times it was required to ensure compliance with certain expected or ordered conditions of behavior. While most of these bonds are related to the election or appointment of individuals to public office, of particular interest are the Free Negro bonds required of free black residents of the state prior to the Civil War. Those who did not or could not afford the bond were required to leave the state. Names of those individuals listed on the bonds are given in this finding aid as they appear on the bonds - women were only listed by first or first and middle names, no last names are provided on the bonds.
