Biographical/Historical Note

William Haynie, a contractor and builder, was born in Macon County, Tennessee. Maria Haynie was born in New York City on April 12, 1823. The couple lived in Little Rock. During the Civil War, their home was converted to a field hospital where William and Maria cared for Confederate and Union soldiers during the capture of Little Rock by Union forces. Maria Haynie served as a member and officer of Ladies Benevolent Association for 14 years. Together, they had three children, Evaline, Emma, and Martin Haynie. William Haynie died April 30, 1895. Maria Haynie died April 9, 1908.
