Biographical/Historical Note
Donald E. Grigg (1939-2010) was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, in 1939 to Thurman and Florene Coplen Grigg. Grigg served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960-1963. He then attended Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, graduating and receiving his commission into the U.S. Army in 1965. He served two tours in Vietnam, where he received a combat wound. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and the Combat Infantry Badge. After being medically retired as a Captain in 1968, his life’s mission and passion were to serve and honor his fellow veterans and active-duty military. Through his various positions, he worked for the rest of his life to help hundreds of veterans from all eras receive their deserved awards, job training, benefits, and honors. Grigg was the Executive Director of the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program from 1982-1997, Staff Assistant for Military and Veteran Affairs for Congressman Jay Dickey from 1997-2001, and Senior Aide for Military and Veteran Affairs for Congressman Mike Ross from 2001 until his death in 2010. Grigg was on the Arkansas Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee, having originated the idea for the memorial in 1982 and participating in fundraising projects to make it a reality in 1987. He died in 2010 at the John McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas.
