This collection contains one broadside, a message from William Lewis Cabell, Brigadier General, "To the People of North and West Arkansas" assuming command of troops during the U.S. Civil War.

Biographical/Historical Note

William Lewis Cabell (1827-1911) was a Confederate brigadier general who served in the Trans-Mississippi Department in Arkansas during the U.S. Civil War and served as mayor of Dallas, Texas in 1874, 1877, and 1883. He was born in Danville, Virginia, on January 1, 1827 and died in Dallas, Texas, on February 22, 1911. During the Civil War, he took command of Confederate troops on the White River and tried to take back control of northwestern Arkansas. He was captured at the Battle of Mine Creek on October 25, 1864 and spent the war as a prisoner at Johnson's Island and Fort Warren in Ohio and Massachusetts.
