Description

This collection contains the farming account book of Caleb Hugh Mills in Georgia and Arkansas from 1857-1864. It also contains debt notes and other financial information about Thomas Mills.

Biographical/Historical Note

Caleb Hugh Mills and his family moved to Stone County, Arkansas from Walker County, Georgia in 1859. The family farm was located near Locust Grove Precinct, about 50 miles from Batesville. Caleb Hugh Mills married Melvina Lawrence in Chattooga, Georgia on October 3, 1844. The couple had six children: Hester Amanda, Martha, Thomas, Cynthia, Nancy, and an infant girl who died in March of 1860. Mills and his daughter Hester Amanda were murder by four men who came to their homestead on the night of February 15, 1864.
