This collection contains a Civil War muster roll for Company H of the 23rd Arkansas Infantry, a letter from James E. Sparks to his wife, and a tintype photograph of James E. Sparks.

Biographical/Historical Note

James E. Sparks was a Confederate Army captain serving in Company H in the 23rd Arkansas Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The regiment was commanded by Oliver P. Lyles. According to the muster roll in this collection, Sparks was born in Danville, Virginia, and enlisted in Harrisburg, Arkansas. He was 24 years old in 1895 when the muster roll was completed.
