Biographical/Historical Note

John Hjaelmhof Sorenson was a cartoonist, artist, and advertising executive in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born on November 22, 1924, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to Paul Sorensen and Elly Hjelmhof Sorensen. He immigrated to the United States following World War II and promptly contracted tuberculosis. At the Triboro Hospital for Tuberculosis in Jamaica, New York, Sorensen met Betty Hunter, an occupational therapy student from Arkansas. They married on June 15, 1949. They had three children. Sorensen continued to suffer from tuberculosis, and the couple started a move toward New Mexico in 1950. However, Sorensen was hospitalized while on their way. He remained in the Arkansas State Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Booneville for three years. Sorensen began recovering and started his career as a cartoonist in Little Rock. Later, his work appeared in many major publications including the Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, Cosmopolitan, and the Saturday Review. He was also president of Sorensen and Associates, an advertising company in Little Rock. He remained in Little Rock the rest of his life and died on April 6, 1969. The Arkansas State Archives also holds the papers of John Sorensen's wife, Betty Hunter Sorensen Adams; as well as those of her father Joseph Boone Hunter, who served as Director of Human Services at Rohwer Relocation Center.
