This collection contains the organizational records of the Church Women United of Arkansas and Pulaski County. It includes meeting minutes, reports, correspondence, newsletters, news articles, member directories, financial records, and yearbooks.
Biographical/Historical Note
Church Women United is a national Christian women's group. It was founded during World War II in 1941 as the United Council of Church Women. The organization changed its name to Church Women United in 1966. Their mission is to be "a racially, culturally, theologically inclusive Christian women's movement celebrating unity in diversity and working for a world of peace and justice." The organization has been involved in the promotion of women's rights, civil rights, and other social issues. The movement is multi-denominational representing Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and other Christian women. It has over 1,200 local and state units in the United States and Puerto Rico. The Arkansas Council of Church Women was organized in Little Rock in 1945. There are now multiple Church Women United units across the state. This collection contains material relating to the Arkansas and Pulaski County units, which are part of the Church Women United South Central chapters.
