Biographical/Historical Note
Through a vision seated in generosity and sacrifice the curator of the Horace Mann High School History Project encouraged her family to purchase a house in the Pettaway neighborhood to establish the Out of the Attic History Gallery in October, 2011. It is a display of Black History. The story of the education of black students in the Little Rock public schools from 1929 to 1971 is revealed. Visitors can research genealogy and explore the life of Black citizens in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 2005, the Horace Mann History Project was awarded a collaborative research grant from Arkansas Humanities Council and then in 2008 a grant from the Black History Commission of Arkansas. Survey questionnaires were mailed to 1,300 alumni who lived throughout the U.S. and abroad. The survey explained the need to preserve life and legacy of education in Little Rock Public Schools before desegregation. Overwhelmingly, positive feedback poured in. A collection began of oral histories, historical documents, photo images, yearbooks; Bearcat, Arkansas State Press, Southern Mediator newspapers; black magazines; three dimensional items, musical instruments, cheerleader sweater, band uniform dickey, manual typewriters, photographer cameras, 16mm projector, vinyl record player and Negro History textbook to name a few. The donated items had been found in the school attic, household attics, trunks, file cabinets; thus the name “Out of the Attic History Gallery.” NOTE: June 2007, the History Project loaned some of the above items to the Arkansas State Capitol Historian to set up an exhibit in the Capitol Rotunda entitled “The Legacy of Horace Mann: Before ‘1957’ and Beyond.” In September 2007, the display was dismantled and placed in storage. The Attic was established to get the collection out of storage.
