This collection contains a letter written by Ira J. Smith of Dobbins' 1st Arkansas, Confederate States Army, dated April 19 and 22 1863 to his wife and family.

Biographical/Historical Note

Ira Jackson Smith (1824-1898) was born September 8, 1824 to Phillip Smith and Annice Smith in Warren County, Tennessee. The Smith family moved to Lawrence County, Arkansas in 1833. He married Nancy J. Reynolds in 1849 in Smithville, Arkansas. Smith served in Dobbins 1st Cavalry, Confederate States Army. He died March 16, 1898 near Lead Hill, Arkansas.
