Description
Commemorative ribbon from thirtieth annual Sunday school convention, Springdale, Arkansas, 1913
Biographical/Historical Note
Initially an important education movement that was displaced by free, compulsory public education in the 1870s, the non-sectarian Protestant Sunday schools of the late 19th and early 20th century frequently offered uniform lessons across denominational lines. The annual conventions brought together many adults and children for special programs, parades and rallies. The stamped commemorative ribbon is typical of those woven at Paterson, New Jersey, "Silk City, U.S.A.," and used throughout the country at church, social and political events.
