Description
This is a $100 bond posted by Thomas Drew and Casper Schmick in order to operate a ferry across the Black River near Lewis deMun's mill in Lawrence County.
Biographical/Historical Note
During the territorial period, there was little room in the county budget to build infrastructure. To address this problem, counties granted licenses to individuals to build ferries and bridges which could be privately financed and operated with toll fees. This benefited both the county at large and enterprising individuals who were willing to become ferry operators or bridge builders. Thomas S. Drew and Casper Schmick were two such people. They were granted a ferry license in 1830 at a desirable spot on the Black River. After posting the bond required, Drew and Schmick built and operated a toll ferry.
