Description

This document commands James McCarroll the constable of Strawberry Township, Lawrence County to keep Jarrett in the jailhouse because he was found guilty of murdering Polly Hillhouse.

Biographical/Historical Note

After the inquest was conducted, Thomas McCarroll held court as a justice of the peace and found Jarrett guilty of murdering Polly Hillhouse. Jarrett was then remanded to jail to await a full trial at the next term of court. It's notable that the constable who oversaw the jail, James McCarroll, was related to the justice of the peace who pronounced a guilty sentence. There is very little evidence given in this JP case aside from the inquest findings, which is all observation.
