Hempstead County was founded in 1818 by the Missouri territorial legislature before Arkansas Territory was established.
This scrapbook includes newspaper clippings, circa 1930s-1940s, and court documents, spanning 1821-1875, from what would become Hempstead County, Arkansas. This scrapbook was compiled circa 1930s-1940s by Lucile M. Carrigan, a worker of the Historical Records Survey. Loose documents were removed from the scrapbook by Arkansas State Archives staff in 2021 for conservation reasons, and original locations are recorded in the comments field of each item.
