Opie read, famous Arkansas novelist of a generation ago, was born 1852 in Nashville, Tenn… Learned the printer's trade and was said to have been a born story-teller… Began newspaper work at Franklin, KY… Lived nomadic life and wandered into Arkansas... Worked on newspapers at Carlisle and Conway... Came to Little Rock 1877 as a reporter on the Gazette..
Opie Read
Married in 1881 and went to the Cleveland Ohio, leader... Returned to Little Rock and began publication of the Arkansas Traverler which reached circulation of sixty thousand... Moved the Traveler to Chicago and devoted himself to literary work... He was the author of many well-known novels including: An Arkansas Planter, Emmett Bonlore, and the Waters of Caney Creek... Opie Read was a striking figure 6 ft. 3 in. tall and weighing 250 pounds.
