The pioneer riverman

Philip Pennywit

Born 1793 in Virginia.. Early in life he navigated the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers with a keelboat… He came to Arkansas 1828 in command of the "Facility"… He made five round trip voyages between the mouth of the river and Ft. Gibson during the boating season..

The facility was too large for use on the Arkansas River and Capt. Pennwit replaced it with the Waverly..... In 1830 he took the Waverly up the White River to Batesville.

He continued as a riverman until 1847 then entered mercantile business in Van Buren and later in Little Rock. Capt. Pennywit never married.. He died 1868.
