This collection contains records and pamphlets pertaining to Dr. Runyan's medical practice.

Biographical/Historical Note

Joseph P. Runyan founded St. Luke's Hospital in 1911, after moving to Little Rock from Pine Bluff in1898. He was nationally known for his work as a surgeon. Active in many professional organizations, Runyan served as president of the Arkansas State Board of Health (1904-1906), secretary of the Arkansas Medical Society (1901-1904), as well as dean and president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Little Rock, from its founding in 1906 until it merged with the medical department of the University of Arkansas in 1912.
