Description
This collection contains articles of incorporation and correspondence pertaining to the early operation of the City Electric Railway Company of Little Rock and the hardships it faced due to lack of funds.
Biographical/Historical Note
The City Electric Street Railway Company of Little Rock was incorporated in 1887 by Howard Adams, M.W. Benjamin, and John B. Jones. The first track operated from Second and Louisiana Street to the Southeast part of Little Rock. They began using horse-drawn streetcars but eventually changed to steam-operated streetcars. Officers of the company included Howard Adams, President; M.W. Benjamin, Secretary; John B. Jones, Treasurer; and C.H. Blakeslee, Superintendent. Directors included John B. Jones, W.B. Worthen, Harry E. Kelley, Howard Adams, and M.W. Benjamin. The company closed due to bankruptcy in 1895.
